What is Cupertino Hoops?
Cupertino Hoops is an all-volunteer, basketball league with the primary goal of creating a positive culture for youth basketball and where kids learn to love to play the game. The league is a long-time member of the Stanford Positive Coaching Alliance whose founder, Jim Thompson, is one of the founders of Cupertino Hoops.
What are the Goals of Cupertino Hoops?
Cupertino Hoops has set the following goals:

- Redefine Winning
- Use Positive Motivation
How are these goals met?
By developing positive coaches
All Cupertino Hoops coaches must be certified as “Positive Coaches”. This requires participation in a training session conducted by the Stanford Positive Coaching Alliance. The goals of a positive coach are to always:
- Put players first
- Develop character and skills
- Foster internal motivation
- Refuse to use fear, intimidation or shame
- Create a partnership with players
- Honor the game
By ensuring quality officiating
Quality, paid officiating is vital to player development. Players learn more when officials are knowledgeable and make consistent decisions.
By requiring that parents “Honor the Game” both in words and actions
Can I become a Cupertino Hoops player?
Players must be at least 9yrs old by Sept 1st and may play in one of the following divisions:
- 4th / 5th / 6th Grade Girls
- 6th / 7th / 8th Grade Girls (Advanced 6th Graders)
- 4th / 5th Grade Boys
- 6th / 7th / 8th Grade Boys
- 6th / 7th / 8th Grade Boys Competitive
* Evaluation Required During mid Oct for all 6th / 7th / 8th Grade Girls and Boys *
** Experience (YMCA, SYBL, Community Center, NJB, Camps, …) is Recommended **
When and where are practices and games?
Players will have 2 one hour practices per week (week nites; 6pm and later) at Cupertino and West San Jose middle schools. Games are typically held on Saturday at Fremont High School, with some mid-week games. Practices start in early Nov, with an end of year tournament in mid Feb.
What is the cost for the season?
The total cost for the season is $175, which includes a uniform and team picture. Financial assistance is available.
